European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
