An defense minister has confirmed that the MoD is currently looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for MoD Staff
During a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about classified information while riding in China-made vehicles.
He explained that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified level in any car, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Defence Background
The announcement follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
This broader security environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of official activities, from vehicle use to discussions habits.
