Several influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Platform Moderation and Safety Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly monitored dangerous material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Cautions
“Individuals are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to recent price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.
Her team has already seen patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Statement
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
