Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
